Mithila's festival Bhatri Dwitiya was celebrated with joy

Sisters prayed for long life for their brothers


Koshi Zone, Saharsa. Bhatri Dwitiya festival based on unbreakable love between brother and sister was celebrated with joy on Sunday in Mithila. It is also known as Bhaiya Dooj. This festival is celebrated on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya. Due to which this festival is celebrated as Bhatri Dwitiya. According to mythological and religious beliefs regarding this festival, Surya Putra Yam goes to his sister Yamuna's house on this day and takes blessings from her. Sister Yamuna also welcomes her brother with great respect and prays for his long life. On this occasion all the sisters pray for long life for all their brothers of blood relation and heart relation.  In which sisters apply tilak on the forehead of their brothers with rice flour and make them sit on a wooden stool with arapan and put paan, betel nut and silver coin in their hands and wish them a long life. On this day sisters give paan, betel nut, coin in the hands of their brothers and bless them with grass and rice. On the occasion of Bhaiya Dooj brothers also eat food at their sisters' house and give them valuable things as gifts.

Sisters wait for this festival throughout the year. They fast till their brothers come. The festival of Bhaiya Dooj shows the pure love and dedication of brother and sister. In which brothers also assure their sisters of safety and promise to solve all kinds of problems. Sisters also wish for the increase in the age of their brothers just like the water increases in Ganga and Yamuna.  In Mithila, the festival of Sama Chakeba is also celebrated as the eternal love of brother and sister, which starts from the morning of Chhath and ends on Kartik Purnima. In this, sisters sing songs in honor of their brothers and play the game of Sama Chakeva. They also punish the witch for abandoning evil.
